GPS in the Future
Born in the laboratories of scientists and built on the fruits of publicly supported basic research, GPS has given the world a technology of unbounded promise. And now, as we witness GPS devices getting more and more accurate with updated device revisions and precise mapping capabilities, the price points falling substantially and specific models being catered to targeted needs of consumers, the future of GPS technology and operability seems to be virtually unlimited.

One aspect of the future of GPS is the increase of its usage and expansion into new areas of application. It’s been predicted that by 2010 there will be over 50 million GPS users that perform applications relating to automobiles, ships, aircrafts and military systems. The addition of civilian codes and frequencies will be developed to solely meet the needs of civilian users. Additional advances in GPS devises will also include a precise ability to update new points-of-interest and newly developed areas which will add to an increased positional accuracy and more reliable calculations. The ongoing developments are also making the existing maps more useful through impressive graphics.

Since the margins aren't great for hardware, a lot of companies are planning on charging for premium GPS services by making them disruptive enough to where it makes sense for the consumers to pay more for a better unit. Another key point of GPS future is user interface. With the biggest GPS device makers focusing their attention and resources on that aspect, the consumers can expect to see the improved and updated user interface, which will be impressive and pleasing to look at.

Another exciting update to look forward to is the development of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) that capitalizes on the compatibility of technology from the NAVSTAR and the GALILEO GPS system. This comprehensive support system would provide users with navigation information that covers a broader area and provides high accuracy data. GPS users all around the world will benefit from the access to more satellites due to the availability of two or more satellite constellations.

GPS - Myths and Truth
Just like everything else on planet Earth, GPS navigation systems have their fans and detractors and there are many myths surrounding GPS. Below you’ll find some of the most widespread myths addressed as it relates to the truths so that you can make a value judgment and see that you really shouldn’t believe everything you hear.

Myth 1: GPS does not work in cloudy places and rainy weather.
Truth: GPS devices were originally developed for sailing - so they have to be waterproof. The GPS signals are not affected by clouds, rain, fog or snow - they work just as well if the day is wet or dry and they don’t mind thick cloud cover. GPS device can take a dunking in a cold beck or hot coffee and still work fine.

Myth 2: Someone can track me through my GPS.
Truth: In general, no you can not be tracked through your GPS. However there are some GPS series and specialized devices designed to track everything from lost pets to teenagers to commercial vehicles, but they are not your typical GPS receivers. Plus if you have the tracklog enabled on your GPS receiver, someone with access to your GPS can physically connect it to a computer and see where you've been and when. But it’s not the same as real-time tracking.

Myth 3: GPS devices will not work indoors or in forests.
Truth: A GPS device (such as a GPS Device for walking and hiking) needs to be exposed to the sky and the satellites. It will not work well beneath a canopy of trees and will not work at all in thick forests. It will not work indoors either - although you can get a reading if you hold it near or out of the window.

Myth 4: GPS are no use in small trips.
Truth: If you are traveling in an unfamiliar area, chances are you will get lost while in a small trip. Plus you’ll need information on where you can find the nearest gas station, place to eat, etc. which only a GPS device can provide.

Myth 5: Forget the map and compass, all you need these days is a GPS device (for outdoor recreation).
Truth: A GPS device is an excellent navigational aid, but that’s it. GPS devices are good at telling you were you are. They use batteries for power and when the batteries die you still need to navigate. So a map and compass are still essential to have on you to ensure you can get from where the GPS says you are to where you intend to end up.

Myth 6: A factory-installed GPS navigation system in a car is better than aftermarket GPS devices.
Truth: Most of the factory installed navigations systems are really difficult to operate. Plus they are significantly more expensive than an aftermarket portable navigation device. While it’s true that they are more difficult to steal, factory-installed GPS devices are also much more difficult to upgrade with new maps, POI databases, and features.

Myth 7: GPS are too expensive
Truth: You don’t have to buy an expensive GPS device to own. You always have an option of renting a GPS for very cheap just when you need it.

GPS Unit - Rent or Buy?
GPS navigation systems have become an increasingly popular gadget over the past few years. Many of us have gotten used to this gadget so much that we can’t imagine our lives without GPS systems. Everyone will agree that it is a great thing to have a 'co-pilot' creating a route to get you to your destination and then giving clear, accurate, voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions. No more stress of driving in unfamiliar areas. No more printing and shuffling of road maps. No more looking for street signs or having to ask for directions.

If you don't already own a GPS unit you might be asking yourself: “So should I buy it or should I rent it”? Well, if you are either a frequent business traveler or a restless adventure seeker then the best option for you would be to purchase your own GPS unit to always have it with you. But if you are an occasional traveler and you don’t find yourself in unfamiliar places all that often, then renting a GPS unit would be an ideal solution for you. Occasional travelers might consider renting a GPS navigation system when planning a road trip, an off road adventure, holiday travel to Europe or going house hunting over the weekend. If you just moved to a new city and don’t know your way around yet, it’s also a good idea to rent a GPS unit. For groups it is good to have more than one GPS, especially when planning rendezvous, a key-exchange, or increasing the fun of geocaching adventure. When you're in a foreign location, a car navigation system may be your best travel companion. Not all car rental companies provide GPS for a car, so being able to bring along a GPS rental is reassuring.

No matter what your needs might be the latest digital navigation technology incorporated into portable GPS units is able to route you coast to coast at an affordable rental price. Rent from 3-days to 2-weeks with rates varying from $25.00-$39.00 for three days to $35.00-$59.00 for fourteen days depending on the degree of detail, speed and accuracy your GPS provides. Soon after renting a GPS you’ll discover that it’s worth every penny. It will help you find your way around and lead you to your destination safely and quickly.
